How it works

Finasteride is a competitive inhibitor of human 5 a-reductase, an intracellular enzyme which metabolises testosterone into the more potent androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), enlargement of the prostate gland is dependent upon the conversion of testosterone to DHT within the prostate. It is highly effective in reducing circulating and intraprostatic DHT. Finasteride has no affinity for the androgen receptor.

Usage And Safety

Dosage

Adults : 1 tab daily using strength as clinically appropriate for atleast 6 mnth to assess response. Therefore , treatment should be continued long term. Treatment of male pattern baldness ( men only ) : 1 tab of 1mg once daily. Children : Not Recommended. OR As directed by your physician.

Side Effects

• Breast swelling or tenderness • Palpitations (feeling your heartbeat) • Changes in the way your liver is working, which can be shown by a blood test • Pain in your testicles • Blood in semen • An inability to have an erection which may continue after stopping the medication • Male infertility and/or poor quality of semen. Improvement in the quality of the semen has been reported after stopping medication • Depression • Decrease in sex drive that may continue after stopping the medication • Problems with ejaculation that may continue after stopping the medication • Anxiety

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines. Proscar does not usually affect other medicines.

Indication

It used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. It may also be used to reduce the risk of a sudden inability to pass urine and the need for surgery related to BPH in men with an enlarged prostate. Treatment of male pattern baldness ( androgenic alopecia) in men only.

When not to Use

Do not take if: You are a woman (because this medicine is for men) or You are allergic (hypersensitive) to finasteride or any of the other ingredients .

Precautions

Precaution

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you are going to have a blood test called PSA. This is because finasteride can affect the results of this test.

Warnings

Warning 1

Breast cancer has been reported in men taking finasteride 5 mg during clinical trials and the post-marketing period. Physicians should instruct their patients to promptly report any changes in their breast tissue such as lumps, pain, gynaecomastia or nipple discharge.

Warning 2

Mood alterations including depressed mood, depression and, less frequently, suicidal ideation have been reported in patients treated with finasteride 5 mg. Patients should be monitored for psychiatric symptoms and if these occur, the patient should be advised to seek medical advice.

Warning 3

It is not indicated for use in children.
