How it works
Montelukast is from a group of medicines called leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs). LTRAs work by stopping the chemicals in your body that narrow your airways. These chemicals are called leukotrienes. Montelukast helps stop your airways from narrowing (caused by inflammation).
Usage And Safety
Dosage
5 mg tablet: The dosage for paediatric patients 6 month-6yr, 4mg once daily in evening. 6-15yr, 5mg once daily chewable tablet daily to be taken in the evening. 10 mg tablet: The dosage for adults and adolescents 15 years of age , 10 mg tablet daily to be taken in the evening. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist for dose adjustment.
Side Effects
Abdominal pain , Headache , Thirst , Rarely anaphylaxis , Angioedema , seizure , GI upset .
Drug Interactions
Phenobarbital , Phenytoin , Rifampicin , Other enzyme inducers , gemfibrozil.
Indication
Asthma , Perennial Allergic Rhinitus , Acute prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction , Relief of symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
When not to Use
Hypersensitivity to any component of this product.
Precautions
Precaution
Patients should be advised never to use oral montelukast to treat acute asthma attacks and to keep their usual appropriate rescue medication for this purpose readily available. If an acute attack occurs, a short-acting inhaled ß-agonist should be used. Patients should seek their doctor’s advice as soon as possible if they need more inhalations of short-acting ß-agonists than usual.
